By Christopher (C. G.)
Bond
Long before there was
Freddy Kruger, or even Jack the Ripper, there was the legend of
the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. For two centuries theater-goers
and penny dreadful fans have been thrilled with the exploits of
Sweeney Todd, the murderous barber, who dispatched his customers
with a flick of the razor and then had his lover serve up the
remains in a tasty meat pie.
Christopher Bond's play was responsible for inspiring the
musical version of SWEENEY TODD by Stephen Sondheim (in fact, he
shares a credit on the musical). Sondheim was in London in 1973
for the opening of GYPSY with Angela Lansbury and, being a fan of
grand guignol, went to the Theatre Royal at Stratford East where
Bond was staging his own adaptation of the old Todd slaughter
vehicle from the 1800's. The result was a great success and
appealed to Sondheim immensely.
Brundage Park Playhouse is
giving audience members the chance to see the original play which
inspired the classic musical (recently filmed with Johnny
Depp).
Thrills and chills for
